Convulsions or Fits

What are they ?

A convulsion is a medical condition where body muscles contract and relax rapidly and repeatedly, resulting in an uncontrolled shaking of the body.  The term "convulsion" is often used interchangeably with "seizure," although there are many types of seizure, some of which have subtle or mild symptoms instead of convulsions. Seizures of all types are caused by disorganized and sudden electrical activity in the brain.

Symptoms

Ø  Signs of fever

Ø  Hot, flushed skin

Ø  Sudden loss of consciousness

Ø  Convulsive movements such as jaw clenches

Ø  Body becoming rigid

First aid aims

Ø  Treat casualty for unconsciousness

Ø  Protect casualty while unconscious

Ø  Arrange for medical help where necessary

ACTIONS

ü  When a seizure occurs, the main goal is to protect the person from injury. Try to prevent a fall by laying the person on the ground in a safe area. The area should be cleared of furniture or other sharp objects.

ü  Cushion the person's head.

ü  Loosen tight clothing, especially around the neck.

Further action

ü  When the convulsions are over, ensure the person's airway is open and check their breathing.

ü  Place the person in the rcovery position.

ü  Sponge their skin with tepid water to help keep them cool.
