      SPORTING QUESTIONS

Following news this week that the total number of teenagers taking up team sports has fallen, we’re asking why so many people prefer individual sports. Sure, there are advantages: if you work out at the gym, you burn off calories and keep in shape and do it at a time that is convenient for you. But what about the friendship and the feeling of togetherness you get when you play for a team?

Are you a team player or do you prefer to go it alone? Here’s what our readers said.

Jordan, 16 – Not everyone has the confidence or the ability to participate in team sports. I’m 16 and I like taking on new challenges, but I’m not good enough to get into my school football team.

Jack, 15 – When I play tennis, it’s just me against my opponent – it’s quite lonely without teammates. When I’m preparing for a competition I just see my coach. When I compete in a tournament and I beat an opponent, there’s just my family to cheer me on. I love tennis, I love winning matches, but I miss the sense of belonging you get in a team.

Sherri, 14 – I prefer team sports, but sometimes it’s difficult when you let your team down. Last year, I had such a lot of school work that I had to drop out of my basketball team halfway through the season. I felt terrible.

Megan, 16 – I do an individual sport, karate, but I feel part of a team and I’m motivated to score points for my club. I go in for competitions, and when I came first recently, I felt it was for the club, not for myself. With the trainers, other club members and supporters, it’s like a big family.

      Sunglasses

One item of clothing which has never really gone 1  of fashion are sunglasses. If you want to 2  for a cool, casual look, then simply put on a pair of sunglasses and you will instantly look great. Not only that, but sunglasses provide a 3 way of helping you see better when it’s sunny or bright.

What many people might not 4 is that sunglasses were first invented hundreds, if not thousands of years ago. The Inuit people have used special glasses for a very long time. They live in a place with a lot of snow, which can be 5  bright on a sunny day. The sunglasses are important because they help to 6 their eyes.

Hundreds of years ago, in China, judges used to wear dark glasses to hide their faces when they were asking questions to witnesses. This is 7 similar to today’s film, sports and music stars, who now wear sunglasses in the street when they don’t want their 8 to recognise them!
