      Colours are important

      Healthy brains

1 Our brains are very complicated organs. As they get older, the nerve cells (neurons) die, connections between nerve cells (synapses) are lost and the brain gets smaller and lighter. This affects all our brain functions – our memory, our thinking skills and our emotions. However, people’s brains age at different speeds. Why is that? And can we protect the brain against ageing?

2 Scientists used to think that the speed of brain ageing was a result of genetics, that it ran in the family, but now they say only twentyfive percent of the differences are a result of genetics. Seventy-five percent are a result of our upbringing and lifestyle. So, it is possible for people to do things to keep their brains young.

3 Exercise plays an important role. Some exercise such as table tennis, which is fast and competitive, and where you have to think very quickly, can increase the size of the cortex. This improves the connections between nerve cells and affects our ability to solve problems. It can also make us happier and less depressed. Exercise like fast walking can increase the size of the hippocampus, which helps our memory. This might be because aerobic exercise can create new neurons.

4 Food, of course, is also important. Scientists believe that anthocyanin, a natural plant colouring, helps the brain stay young. It can be found in vegetables and fruit that are blue, purple and red, such as purple sweet potatoes, red cabbage, blackcurrants, blueberries and blackberries. It is also believed to help form new nerve connections.

5 Research has also shown that education plays a big part in protecting our brains as we get older. The more new things we learn when we’re younger (and throughout our lives), the better for our brains. Some people believe that learning a second language is one of the best ways to keep our brains healthy.
