      Buenas tardes. = Good afternoon/evening.
      Buenas noches. = Good evening/night.
      Hola. = Hello.

      Hasta pronto. = See you soon.
      Chao. = Bye.
      ¡Hasta luego! = See you later!
      ¡Adiós! = Good-bye!

      Estrategia

      All the expressions presented here are quite general across the Spanish-speaking world, but remember that there are many others and that uses may vary even between regions of the same country.

      Buenos días, buenas tardes and buenas noches are related to the time of the day (morning, afternoon and evening/night) and the formality of the situation. Both factors vary a lot from country to country.

      Estrategia

      Remember, words highlighted in blue are considered active vocabulary for the lesson. Nevertheless, if you need or are interested in different words, do not hesitate to ask your teacher or look them up by yourself. Your textbook is an important tool in your learning process, but you need to be proactive and develop your own personal vocabulary to be able to talk about your world.

      ¿Necesitas ayuda?

      Although there are exceptions, these are the basic rules to pluralize nouns in Spanish:

      • if the noun ends in a vowel, we add -s: libros, cuadernos, hojas de papel...
      • if the noun ends in a consonant (most commonly l, r, n, d or z), we add -es: papeles, proyectores, televisores, pizarrones...

      Palabras en español

      /useruploads/ctx/a/327092434/r/s/112843401/aula_en_accion_1_lecc_prel_act11.mp3?idcurso=3649010P.11. Palabras en español. How many words do you understand in these pictures?

      Spanish words in signs and facades

      P.12. ¿Cuántas palabras comprendemos? Share your number with the class. Then, each of you will say in English the words you understand.

      • Yo comprendo 10 palabras.
      • Yo, 12.

      Teatro significa "theater", ¿no?

      Estrategia

      You'll notice that many words are quite similar in Spanish and English. These are called cognates and they may or may not have the same meaning in both languages. Be aware of the context when you find cognates so you can tell if they are false cognates (cognates with different meanings). For example, embarazada might look like the English word embarrassed, but it really means "pregnant".
