      • When Rome became an empire.

      • The process of romanisation.
      • The Pax romana.
      • How the Roman Empire came to an end.

      COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

      A card game

There is a card game called Timeline, in which players have to contribute to a timeline with a card, placing it in the right order.

In Timeline, each card has a historical event in both sides. The date of those events is only on one of the sides.

You can find out more about this game on the Internet.

Can you create your own game about the history of Ancient Rome?

It can be a card game like Timeline, but it can also be a board game.

You will have to make your own rules!

        Think

The empire was stable and prosperous in the first and second centuries AD. There were several capable emperors like Vespasian, Trajan and Marcus Aurelius.

Rome had a well-defended frontier, and there was little social unrest.

The Romans called this the pax romana (‘Roman peace’) or pax Augusta, in honour of emperor Augustus.

          Digital competence

Digital competence involves the confident, critical and responsible use of, and engagement with digital technologies for learning, working, and for participation in society.

It includes an understanding of being a digital citizen as well as security, privacy, intellectual property, problem-solving and computational thinking.

The population of the regions conquered by Rome adopted the law, customs, beliefs and language (Latin) of the Romans.

This process is called romanisation and we can still see its traces today.

Romanisation took place in all of the regions conquered by the Romans.

When did the Roman Empire conquer Egypt? And Dacia?

Find out and you can use these dates in your card game.

Hint: Make sure that you use reliable sources and keep a list of the websites or other resources that you use.

In the third century AD the Roman Empire faced a severe crisis as a result of wars, political instability and economic difficulties. Trade declined and many people went to live in the countryside. This process was called ruralisation. Despite all these problems, the empire lasted until AD 476.

Do some research and decide what caused the decline of the Roman Empire.

Who declared Christianity the official and only religion in the Empire? When did that happen?

Don’t forget to take note of the dates. You’ll need them to make the cards or your gameboard.

            • Cut a white cardboard into small pieces to create your mini-cards.
            • Draw a scene, or paste an image found on the Internet, to represent the event on both sides of each card.
            • On the front, write a very short description of the event.

            1. In each round, each player must add one card to the timeline created on the table.
            2. Place your card to the left of a card in the timeline if you think your event was before that, and to the right if you think it was after it.
            3. If you are wrong, the card must be discarded. Take another one from the pile.

In Timeline, a round ends when one player has no more cards left. The person without cards wins the round. After five rounds, the winner is the person that won the most rounds. You can use the 3D printed version of the legionaries to keep track of who wins each round, or you can use something different.
