      SALUDOS EN EL MUNDO HISPANO

In Spanish-speaking countries, it is customary saludar (greet) one’s friends and relatives with un beso (a kiss) on the cheek, un apretón de manos (a handshake) or un abrazo (a hug).

Dar un beso (give a kiss) can vary depending on the setting, region, and gender. In social settings, greetings between women, and women and men, include kissing on the cheek. In Spain and Paraguay it is common dar dos besos. In other countries, like Mexico, dar un beso on the right cheek is the norm. Men generally greet each other with un abrazo or un apretón de manos. However, in Argentina male friends and relatives tend to dar un beso on the cheek.

When you are first introduced to someone, or in a formal setting, un apretón de manos is more appropriate.

Two girls kissing on the cheeks.

      Situación informal: beso o abrazo
