      Imperialism, revolution and war

From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the world saw a rise in powerful countries and colonial empires, as well as tensions and conflicts that devolved into the First World War.

These events, along with the Russian Revolution, had a profound impact around the globe.

      Shared and acquired cultures

Imperialism brought many different cultures into contact, and the effects can still be seen in today's societies.

The Beatles and Cornershop exemplify this exchange through music.

The Beatles' music was heavily influenced by Indian culture as demonstrated in Norwegian Wood, one of the first Western songs to feature a sitar, which popularised Indian music in the West.

Cornershop's cover of Norwegian Wood, sung in Hindi and blending Indian and Western styles, reflects the cultural exchange between India and Britain fueled by imperialism.

      Diverse viewpoints

As you read about imperialism and learn about the different factors that influenced it, from economic and political, to religious and ideological, think about the problems it caused, debate about the importance of immigration, reflect on opposing viewpoints and draw your own opinions.

      Pessimism turned into art

Between 1914 and 1918, many countries participated in World War I, a terrible conflict that devastated cities and cost millions of human lives.

Its horrors generated a pessimistic view of humanity expressed through art, cinema and literature.
